KSU Student Apartments: Surviving a Midterm Crunch Week

KSU Student Apartments: Surviving a Midterm Crunch Week

Midterm season at Kent State is a pile-up. Exams, projects, studio reviews and labs all land in the same two weeks. If you live in KSU student apartments near campus, your advantage is the trip home. It’s short. At Paloma Kent on East Summit Street, here’s how to get through a crunch week in one piece.

How do you get through midterms in KSU student apartments?

You plan food and sleep first, and the studying fits around them. That sounds backwards. But the students who fall apart in crunch week usually ran out of one of those two things, not out of hours.

Paloma Kent is at 1450 East Summit Street, close to campus. That means you can work late in a studio or a lab and still be in bed soon after. Here’s the week.

Sunday: stock up

Write every deadline on one page and tape it to the wall. Then go to the store. Buy food you can eat one-handed at a desk and food that reheats.

Cook one big thing. A pot of rice and beans, a tray of pasta. Portion it into containers. This is the single most useful hour of the week.

Tell your roommates what your week looks like. If you’ll be coming in at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, they should know it’s you.

Monday and Tuesday: front-load

Do the hardest thing first, while you still have energy. If you have a studio review Thursday, Monday night is for the big decisions, not Wednesday at midnight.

Work on campus when the work needs campus: a studio desk, a lab, a specific computer. Do everything else at home. Reading, writing and review go faster at your own desk with your own snacks.

I’ve pulled plenty of late nights. The ones that helped were early in the week. The ones the night before mostly produced typos.

Wednesday: how do you get home late?

With a plan. If you’re working in a campus building past dark, decide before you start how you’re getting back. Walk with a classmate who lives the same direction. Check what the university offers for late-night escorts or bus service, and save the number in your phone.

Living close makes this simpler. The walk to East Summit Street is short. Still, stick to lit routes, keep your phone charged and text a roommate when you leave.

This matters more as the month goes on. The clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, and after that it’s dark before most afternoon classes end.

Thursday: the big day

Sleep at least a few hours. A presentation or an exam on no sleep goes worse than one with a slightly unfinished project. I believe that completely, and I’ve tested it both ways.

Eat breakfast. Go over your notes once at home, then walk in early. If you have a gap afterward, go home and lie down. That’s the benefit of living near campus: a real nap in a real bed between obligations.

Friday: finish and stop

When the last thing is turned in, stop working. Don’t start next week’s reading. Go get dinner downtown with the people who suffered alongside you. Acorn Alley and Main Street are full of options, and you’ve earned a table.

Then sleep until you wake up.

What makes a crunch week easier at home?

Three small things. A desk with a good lamp, so home is a real second workspace. A stocked fridge. And roommates who know your schedule.

If you all have different majors, your hard weeks may not line up. That’s useful. The roommate with an easy week can be the one who makes dinner. Next month you return the favor.

What’s next on the calendar?

Halloween is a Saturday this year, October 31. In Kent, that’s a major event downtown. If midterms are behind you by then, it’s a good release. Go with a group and plan your ride.

After that, it’s November and winter in northeast Ohio. Get boots and a real coat before the first snow. The walk to class is short, but it’s still a walk.
